The Carpetbaggers
United States

Harold Robbins (born Harold Rubin, 21 May 1916 – 14 October 1997) was an American novelist known for his fast-paced, sensational stories blending romance, adventure, and glamour. He became one of the best-selling authors of the 20th century, with over 750 million copies of his books sold in more than 30 languages.

Born in New York City, Robbins grew up in Brooklyn and worked various jobs—including in a grocery store and at Universal Pictures—before turning to writing. His debut novel, Never Love a Stranger (1948), stirred controversy for its gritty realism and bold themes. Many of his books, such as The Carpetbaggers (1961) and The Betsy (1971), were adapted into successful films and television productions.

Robbins’s novels often drew from real-life figures and industries, particularly Hollywood, business, and organized crime. Known for pushing the boundaries of mainstream fiction with explicit content and glamorous settings, he maintained commercial success for decades. He continued writing until his death in 1997, leaving a legacy as one of the pioneers of modern popular fiction.
